investing significant R&D and engineering resources of their own. But that front-end and system-level optimization must also allow customization and flexibility. At Radisys we would argue that what operators require for small cell deployments is a cost-optimized approach to implementing SON, but also one that gives the flexibility to deal with a multi-vendor environment, as well as the widest possible range of likely use cases. An example would be the integration of enhanced interference and inter-cell coordination algorithms, such as eICIC (enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination), within the small cell product itself. Our Trillium ® SON software provides mobile operators with key SON functionality for small cell deployments by leveraging Radisys-implemented distributed SON functions, such as ANR and eICIC, combined with a wider SON ecosystem of leading independent SON vendors to deliver a pre-verified and pre-optimised end-to-end SON solution. This brings together SON specialists who have strong algorithm development skills with other key technology elements, including the remaining software stack, the silicon platform and network interfaces. That means we have developed a SON product that offers an easily integrated solution, verified by leading silicon providers, but can also be customized according to operators' preferred use case and architecture. This provides not only cost-optimized SON introduction, but also is a key time-to-market advantage for operators that are faced with the imminent challenges of HetNet deployments. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Renuka Bhalerao is a Senior Product Line Manager at Radisys Corporation. She is responsible for the Trillium software portfolio and her primary focus is on small cell technologies for 3G and LTE. A TMN eBOOK: BRINGING SON AND SMALL CELLS TOGETHER AIRHOP COMMUNICATIONS Different SON architecture approaches: Centralized (left), Distributed (center) and Hybrid (right) One key partner that Radisys leverages to provide a distributed SON capability is AirHop. AirHop is an award-winning provider of SON software that is integrated by most leading small cell SoC developers, including Broadcom, Cavium, Freescale, Intel and TI. Its eSON solution brings a full range of SON capabilities to 3G and LTE small cell and HetNet deployments. eSON can be client-server based or fully distributed, so enabling coordinated optimization between the element layer and core and centralized systems and between a small cell and macrocell layer, across multiple air-interfaces. By integrating eSON within its Trillium software stack for small cells, Radisys can bring a solution that enables: • Reduced OPEX via automatic discovery, self- configuration and other OSS level SON functions • Support for distributed, real-time inter-cell coordination • Real-time coordination among multiple cells coupled with interference management and load balancing algorithms • Improved system capacity via intelligent radio resource allocation • Improved user experiences • Access to user equipment measurements defined by existing air-interface This in turn will support operators to deploy multi-vendor small cell networks in a seamless manner.
