www.radisys.com RADISYS SOLUTION BRIEF | Software Defined Wireless Access Professional Services The Challenge While 'cloudification' of RAN brings the flexibility to decouple the radio and RF from the base band processing and allocates the resources, when needed, from a centralized pool; the evolution is forcing service providers to seek out both technically and commercially disruptive solutions to meet new application demand, while leveraging existing investment in 4G networks to cost effectively evolve to 5G, migrate to cloud datacenters, and seamlessly integrate multi-vendor solutions using Open APIs. There are multiple industry initiatives such as Telecom Infra Project (TIP), xRAN, and M-CORD - advocating CUPS architecture (Control Plane User Plan Separation), cloud efficiencies (SDN, NFV, and cloud computing), and open APIs to move the industry away from proprietary hardware, avoid vendor lock-in, and accelerate service innovation at lower operations cost. The end goal is to create an "Open" RAN environment, the technology adoption by vendor community and carrier's operations team is, however, at an early stage and poses the carrier community with many challenges, such as: 1. The right selection of technology 2. Co-existence of legacy platform based and new cloud based solutions 3. Operational readiness of internal teams 4. Creating a path to commercialization by integrating and customizing open reference architectures with real world applications Orchestration Programmable RAN Control Software-Defined Framework Unbundled eNodeB M-CORD RAN Access Infrastructure Unbundled eNodeB Software Defined RAN Programmable Control The End Goal Open RAN Applications XRAN Standardized Northbound API ONOS (w/XRAN Controller) + XOS + OpenStack/Docker XRAN Standardized Southbound API Local xRAN Agent Controller Remote Access Unit Users Data Unit Core Network Central Access Unit
