February 2018 R A D IS YS CU S T O M E R S T O RY | Verizon Deploys Radisys DCEngine for New Platform as a Service (PaaS) Cluster in 14 Days V ERIZON BENEFIT S FROM R A DIS YS' DCENGINE Radisys' brand new DCEngine solution was deployed in 14 days on-site including the new cloud, accelerating Verizon's time to revenue. Radisys' and Verizon's collaboration, continuous development, and unremitting delivery agile model to introduce new hardware features into the deployed storage cloud proved to be very effective. This Continuous Integration Continuous Deployment (CICD) model continues today with joint weekly planning meetings and a quarterly scheduled introduction of new functionalities. Over 150 racks are now deployed in several sites across the nation. Today, 160PB (2.7PB per rack) of storage is available and by the end of 2016, 4PB of storage per rack will be available. With the DCEngine based multi rack-level infrastructure, that hosts thousands of virtualized network functions (VNFs) and applications under open SDN control, Verizon can quickly scale to meet their evolving service requirements with improved service agility. In the spirit of openness, Radisys contributed the Carrier Grade (CG) Open Rack Specification to the OCP Foundation, which gives Verizon the opportunity to influence the industry and drive down costs. PROFESSION A L SERVICES HELPED ACCELER ATE DEPLOY MENT If Verizon bought 600 nodes from Dell, for example, the Dell hardware would have arrived in a big box and Verizon would have to figure out how to set the bios and figure out the MAC address on all of those nodes. This is a huge problem—a lot of time can be spent on this. To help with this deployment challenge, Radisys' Professional Services did all this pre-configuration work for Verizon. Radisys provided pre-configured racks, built and pre-wired at the factory. The sleds were brought up and burned off-site, then loaded at the Verizon site, hardware and network connectivity tests competed, as well as configuration of the devices (BIOS/RAID/ etc. settings, basic switch configurations, preinstalls of Cumulus on all ToR). At the end of that process, Radisys provided Verizon with a metadata file that tells them exactly what is in each cluster and how each is connected, in addition to providing the MAC address for every interface. The result is that the installation and configuration of the DCEngine equipment into the Verizon data center took days instead of weeks, saving Verizon a lot of valuable time. As Verizon introduces open, flexible technology that paves the way for central office transformation, we look to companies like Radisys to assist us in that journey. Network modernization will rely on solutions such as DCEngine that meet service provider needs with open source hardware and software technologies. –Damascene Joachimpillai, Architect, Verizon Labs RESULT S The project was a huge success! All of the DCEngine racks were delivered and the initial pods were ready for sled install by December, 24, 2015. There was some delay as Verizon upgraded site power upgrade by January 18th, 2016. All the racks were turned over by Radisys on February 3rd with DC/OS V1.4 up and running on February 5th. During that time, only one serial cable was attached the whole time! Craig Neth, Distinguished Engineer—Architecture & Infrastructure from Verizon Labs, noted that this was an impressive accomplishment, given the scope and timescales involved from the September 2015 project start, to DCEngine rack installation by end of year, to a cluster built on new software and DCEngine hardware up and running by early February.
