2 www.radisys.com RADISYS SOLUTION BRIEF | Radisys SD-PON (Software-defined Passive Optical Network) Framework SD-PON: Disaggregating the Broadband Access Network SD-PON is a term that defines the "softwaretization" of the functions that originally resided on legacy OLT boxes in a broadband network. By moving these functions from proprietary black boxes to commodity platforms as software form factors and leveraging white box platforms for access specifics, broadband service providers will be able to disaggregate their networks, lower their costs and break vendor lock-in. SD-PON also adds programmability to the network, enabling broadband service providers to leverage SDN control and manageability. SD-PON aims to deliver a common software platform that can be used across a number of broadband access technologies, from GPON to XGSPON to NG-PON2 and more. By being "access technology agnostic," broadband service providers can leverage one solution across their networks. An SD-PON solution brings two major benefits to broadband service providers: • Hardware abstraction and open design allows for OLT vendor neutrality and deployment flexibility • High programmability and SDN control deliver agility of service deployment and lower OpEx Radisys SD-PON Deployment Model Broadband service providers' deployment model for SD-PON remains unchanged when compared to traditional broadband access network deployment. They are not replacing the fiber (or any other access technology) which would be extremely expensive. Rather, the OLT is deployed as an open and disaggregated white box solution that is built with bare minimum silicon, x86 hardware, and general purpose commodity platforms. Increase in demands Broadband service providers need to be able to support a growing number of subscribers, growing broadband speeds, flattening ARPUs and newer use cases with a network that delivers performance and scalability. Cost efficiency A disaggregated solution provides flexibility and disruption in terms of total cost of solution delivery. Mobile Backhaul in Support of 4G/5G With the advent of 5G, service providers will need to leverage a backhaul channel that can handle 5G network requirements for capacity and extremely low latency.
