radisys.com The Next-Gen Solution for Network Transformation Networks globally are witnessing the rapid growth in broadband traffic volumes and connected devices driven by digitization. In response to these usage patterns, optical networks are evolving toward a more dynamic, flexible, programmable and open model. Disaggregating and virtualizing the access network and deploying an SDN controller (software defined networking) increases optical networking flexibility, programmability, innovation, and reduces vendor lock-in, allowing service providers to migrate toward a multi-vendor network via open and standard interfaces. The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) and Broadband Forum are two industry organizations leading the effort toward open and disaggregated broadband access architectures. • ONF introduced the SDN-Enabled Broadband Access (SEBA™) reference platform built with open components and supporting virtualized access technologies, including PON, G.Fast and more, to deliver residential broadband and mobile backhaul. ONF's VOLTHA™ delivers a hardware abstraction layer for broadband access equipment, enabling the use of white box OLTs. • The Broadband Forum delivered Open Broadband- Broadband Access Abstraction (OB-BAA) to enable a standardized, automated, and accelerated deployment of cloud-based access infrastructure. Radisys has been a pioneer and industry leader in "Open" Network Transformation, including playing a leadership role in Software Defined Passive Optical Networking (SDPON) standards. One of our key strengths lies in transforming open-source projects towards becoming field and production viable. We do this by adding significant management, control and diagnostics capabilities and addressing scaling and performance requirements to deliver a hardened solution for the telecom market. As such, Radisys designed the Connect Open Broadband solution to have synergies with ONF's SEBA and Broadband Forum's OB-BAA architecture. Radisys continues to define architecture and contribute solutions for next generation FTTx networks. Connect Open Broadband is a software-defined Passive Optical Network (PON) solution that is based on the SEBA reference platform and allows for a seamless introduction of the OB-BAA architecture. The open and disaggregated architecture of Connect Open Broadband enables service providers to transition away from proprietary Optical Line Terminal (OLT) "black boxes" in favor of virtualized OLT (vOLT) software and physical white box OLTs (pOLTs). This open and disaggregated model enables broadband service providers to: • Achieve operational efficiency leveraging one-touch automation with end-to-end network management for faster service upgrades and better fault detection. • Drive rapid innovation by eliminating single-source vendor constraints for hardware and software bundle options and instead implement agile, software-based programmability throughout the network. • Realize economies of scale benefits through microservices software, which facilitates scalable network growth. • Gain network agility with highly programmable SDN control that allows broadband service providers to add new network functions on-demand. • Optimize Capex and Opex by reducing operational expenditure, achieving cost-savings using white box OLTs and merchant silicon from a multi-vendor ecosystem. 4
