The Connect Broadband Access Controller is the software framework that enables service providers to disaggregate proprietary optical line terminal (OLTs) "black boxes" into virtualized OLT (vOLT) software and white box physical OLTs (pOLTs). A commercial implementation of VOLTHA, the CBAC abstracts the control plane functionality and implements it in a microservices-based scalable architecture, which can be deployed on standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers or cloud platforms. VOLTHA is an integral part of the CBAC solution; its implementation is key to enabling providers to migrate to vendor agnostic PON networks. The CBAC enables seamless management of scalable multi-vendor white box OLTs. By disaggregating their network and moving control functions from proprietary black boxes to commodity platforms, service providers can leverage standards-based white box platforms for specific access and applications to reduce costs and break vendor lock-in. Making the network more programmable, the CBAC helps broadband service providers leverage SDN control and manageability. The CBAC delivers a common software platform which can be used across numerous broadband access technologies, such as G-PON, XG-PON, XGS-PON, NG-PON2 and more. As the CBAC solution is access technology agnostic, service providers can leverage this single solution across their networks. R A DIS YS M A N AG EMEN T S YS T EM ( RMS ) The Radisys Management System (RMS) Web GUI is an HTTP-based interface for performing operations, administration, maintenance, and provisioning of the Connect Open Broadband solution. All management activities in Connect Open Broadband are handled by the RMS, which is connected to the CBAC through the EMS gateway over REST APIs. The RMS interacts with the providers' Operations Support Systems (OSS), Business Support Systems (BSS), and drives the configuration and control towards the CBAC. The main functions of RMS are: • Interacting with OSS/BSS inventory management • Managing topology of the PON equipment such as OLTs, ONTs, and their operational status • Interacting with OSS/BSS for subscriber configuration and the CBAC entities located at an individual aggregation point in the network Built with inherent efficiencies and scalability, CBAC and RMS are open software platforms that are disaggregated from the hardware with open interfaces, which facilitates quicker product innovation cycles, increased automation and deeper network visibility.
