Radisys’ market-leading MRF portfolio enables Nokia Networks to deliver to mobile operators cost-effective and scalable enhanced video, HD audio and multimedia services

HILLSBORO, OR, U.S. – January 13, 2015Radisys® Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), a market leader enabling wireless infrastructure solutions, today announced a significant Media Resource Function (MRF) supply agreement with Nokia Networks, the world’s specialist in mobile broadband. Nokia Networks has selected Radisys’ MRF product family as the media processing foundation for its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) solution portfolio for standards-based IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) deployments. Nokia Networks will utilize Radisys’ Virtualized MRF and high-capacity MPX-12000 Broadband MRF, built on Radisys’ T-Series Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) platform, to provide its mobile operator customers with the flexibility to choose the media processing solution that best fits their economic and technical requirements for VoLTE/VoWiFi service.

Mobile operators are deploying IMS functionality as part of their LTE rollouts to enable VoLTE, as well as enhanced services including video and HD voice. An MRF is an essential element to support real-time voice and video services in an IMS architecture. Concurrently, mobile operators are developing their telco cloud deployment strategies, and need cost-effective, virtualized media processing. Nokia Networks will make use of a combination of Radisys’ hardware and cloud-ready software platforms to provide its mobile operator customers with a comprehensive range of deployment options for interactive HD voice and video communication services. These services are invoked by Nokia Networks’ carrier-grade and feature-rich Open Telecommunication Application Server (TAS), built according to IMS Core architecture. In addition to gaining best-in-class capabilities and industry-leading performance, Nokia Networks is able to ensure rapid time-to-market for its solution by using the market-proven Radisys portfolio.

“Partnering with Radisys on media processing is a great example of how Nokia Networks can extend its portfolio with solutions from partner companies. In this case, the Radisys product family extends our end-to-end VoLTE solution,” said Michael Clever, senior vice president of Core at Nokia Networks. “We’re able to quickly provide operators with the right media processing solution for their VoLTE deployment, whether it’s a virtualized solution or not. Radisys’ virtualized MRF has been certified within Nokia Networks’ telco cloud partner certification program to work with our virtualized VoLTE solution. This certification program ensures operators get the most comprehensive solutions, which meet the highest quality and security standards.”

The multi-service, multi-codec flexibility of the Radisys MRF positions Nokia Networks’ customers to implement a OneMRF strategy – one media processing infrastructure to address a mobile operator’s entire range of IMS, WebRTC, OTT and transcoding media processing requirements. Mobile operators can deploy a Radisys MRF for one initial service, typically VoLTE, and then rapidly deploy additional applications while using the same MRF as a common media processing resource. By supporting multiple real-time communications services with one media processing IMS architecture, mobile operators can simplify their network, reduce CapEx and ongoing OpEx, and accelerate new service introduction, resulting in an efficient, flexible and scalable infrastructure that maximizes service profitability.

“Nokia Networks is a recognized leader in large networking solutions for the telecommunications industry. Nokia Networks’ selection of the Radisys MRF product family is a testament to our continued leadership in the MRF market and our ability to deliver best-in-class features and deployment options for VoLTE, HD voice and next-gen video services,” said Grant Henderson, vice president, marketing and product management, Radisys. “Nokia Networks is a long-standing customer, already utilizing our technology and products and we are very pleased to extend our strategic relationship with Nokia Networks to include our MRF solutions to better serve its mobile network customers’ needs around the globe. We are also proud of the telco cloud partner certification, which shows that our solutions meet the same high quality and security standards as Nokia Networks’ own products.”
