The Results are In: Heavy Reading’s 5G Network & Service Strategies Operator Survey
By Natasha Tamaskar
It’s that time of year again: Heavy Reading’s third annual 5G Network & Service Strategies Operator Survey is available to download. This report offers insights about the future evolution of 5G networks and services as operators continue to deploy 5G technology. Radisys is proud to contribute to the 2021 report in an effort to create an accurate representation of the 5G ecosystem and share our viewpoint with the industry.
This year’s survey features a range of responses from communications service providers (CSPs) around the world. The report also provides commentary and analysis from Heavy Reading analysts, information about the timelines that are accelerating 5G network investments and cross-domain perspectives on vital mobile network technology questions.
The survey also gathered responses from global CSPs on how and when 5G will scale for the mass market with new service types – network slicing, URLLC, and massive IoT – leading the demand. It is predicted that by 2023 the majority of service providers’ CapEx spends will be on 5G.
It comes as no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on the results of this report. High-speed connections were already a priority before the majority of the workforce was working remotely from home. Now, more than ever, the world’s employees, students, educators and professionals in every field are increasingly in need of a network they can depend on. "Wireless technologies like 5G offer the ability to connect data to a mobile world, of connecting people to people while they’re in transit, and people to things on a massive scale,” says Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas.
In addition to the expected progress surrounding the spread of 5G, there are plenty of remaining obstacles to face and important questions to answer before we can start celebrating these imminent rollouts. Survey respondents shared concerns about challenges such as low latency validation for URLLC applications during 5G field testing, lawful interception implementation and other issues across the board. In light of these hurdles, this year’s report examines how enterprises are finding solutions, developing new business models and continuing to drive their digital transformation innovation within their industry.
As a global leader in open telecom solutions and services, Radisys is deploying our 5G Software Suite with service providers around the world to enable their 5G deployments in sub-6 GHz and mmWave spectrum to meet a variety of use cases. We are excited to be a part of this shift towards the future of 5G and beyond. It’s safe to say that 5G will change the world. It’s just a matter of when. We think soon.
