With growing expertise supporting VoLTE rollouts around the globe, Radisys and Mavenir help mobile operator customers achieve OPEX savings, while freeing up 3G spectrum that can be refarmed for LTE network growth

HILLSBORO, OR, U.S. – February 24, 2014 – Radisys® Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), a market leader enabling wireless infrastructure solutions, today announced new trial wins including global virtualized cloud deployments for Voice over LTE (VoLTE), in partnership with Mavenir Systems (NYSE: MVNR), a leading provider of software-based networking solutions. Mavenir’s mOne® Convergence Platform, combined with Radisys’ Media Resource Function, (MRF), are now deployed in a growing list of mobile operator VoLTE rollouts in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East,  Africa and Asia. Customers using Mavenir’s mOne® Convergence Platform with Radisys’ MRF include Vodafone, Tele2, Deutsche Telekom and MetroPCS (now T-Mobile).

Adding VoLTE to LTE Rollouts – a Lucrative Opportunity for Mobile Operators

As a significant revenue stream for global mobile operators, voice is central to their profitability. While investments in LTE to date have centered on meeting growing mobile data demand and capitalizing on revenues from data plans, mobile operators that migrate their voice service from legacy 3G or 2G network architectures to their LTE networks through investment in an IMS architecture have several advantages. Operators that support voice, data and video services all on a single LTE network can realize OPEX savings, as managing two networks is far more costly than one network. At the same time, operators must make decisions on their spectrum strategy for supporting the exponential growth in mobile traffic. Operators that deploy VoLTE can refarm their existing 3G and 2G allocations to service additional LTE growth, as an alternative to purchasing expensive new spectrum at auction.

Radisys’ MRF as part of an IMS architecture supports the real-time media processing requirements for VoLTE and other video value-added services (VAS), enabling operators that invest in an IMS architecture now to reap the benefits of VoLTE deployments for years to come. Mavenir’s IMS mOne® Convergence Platform uses Radisys’ MRF offerings for its VoLTE solutions.

“During the past year, we’ve helped mobile operators transform their networks and we’ve seen a major uptick in VoLTE trials and deployments with our mobile operator customers around the world, and we are now delivering VoLTE to the cloud,” said Ian Maclean, vice president, Strategy and Marketing, Mavenir Systems. “Leading Tier-1 mobile operators are currently deploying Mavenir’s virtualized IMS technology, powered by Radisys’ MRF, as part of their VoLTE/IMS rollouts. Virtualized IMS solutions can be flexibly deployed to meet business needs such as multi-tenancy and capacity elasticity, an attractive proposition for mobile operators.”

“More and more mobile operators are recognizing that VoLTE makes sense,” said Grant Henderson, vice president of marketing and product management, Radisys. “Adding VoLTE with their LTE rollouts delivers a sound business case, as the near-term virtualized IMS investments to support VoLTE and other revenue generating services can also save millions down the road in network operation and spectrum costs.”

Mavenir integrates the full range of Radisys’ flexible media processing solutions, from using Radisys’ MRF for virtualized cloud deployments and its Software MRF on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers to leveraging the high-density capabilities of its MPX-12000 Broadband MRF. Radisys’ broad MRF portfolio provides scalability and an easy migration path.

“Radisys is pleased to partner with Mavenir, a leader in VoLTE service solutions, and are thrilled with our growing success together helping mobile operators achieve the benefits of VoLTE around the globe,” added Henderson. “Supporting VoLTE, Video VAS, conferencing, and many other services is at the core of the investments that we continue to make in our MRF product portfolio. Our goal is to help mobile operators maximize service revenue opportunities from their LTE network investments.”
