5G Small Cells: Five Opportunities For Enterprise

While much has been made of 5G for the consumer market with global mobile operators pledging blazing fast speeds to their subscribers, I believe the true power of 5G will be realized in the business sphere. In comparison to 4G/LTE technology, 5G promises up to 100x faster speeds and ultra-low latency down to one millisecond. For most consumers who use their mobile devices for video streaming, video conferencing or gaming, 4G/LTE is probably already fast enough.

When we look to Industry 4.0 applications, 5G’s speed and low latency are significant. Industry 4.0 is the term used to describe the 4th Industrial Revolution — which is focused on connecting billions of devices. The primary features of 5G making these wireless connections possible include enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC) and massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC). In industrial settings, these 5G capabilities will support capacity and latency requirements for use cases such as autonomous guided vehicles, video surveillance, asset tracking, robotic factories and more — while improving worker safety and efficiency.
