The telecom industry is evolving and one of the hot topics driving the industry is 5G innovation. To highlight the possibilities of 5G, Radisys recently displayed a multi-vendor service offering consisting of a user-friendly self-service portal that allowed the users to effortlessly upgrade their basic live video streaming service to a premium service and enjoy a live event in 4K video. To simulate a live sporting event, the demo utilized remote controlled cars, connected cameras, and a network slice of a 5G radio access network (RAN). The premium video experience was enabled through a 5G network slice. We are pleased to have partnered with Capgemini, Matrixx, Vlocity, Casa Systems, and Salesforce to develop this demonstration, which was shared at Dreamforce 2019, organized by Salesforce.
With today's technology, upgrading video service for a user can be gated by a complex ordering process, high costs to the operator, and long implementation time. In addition, for live events, it might even be disastrous if thousands of users attempt to upgrade their service simultaneously. To overcome these barriers, the demo showcased how a network slice on a 5G wireless network can enable guaranteed quality of service and user experience through instant self-service upgrade of the network bandwidth for an enhanced video experience. The higher bandwidth and better user experience highlighted:
- Ease of ordering via a self-service portal
- Automated processing and execution of the order
- Increase in speed – an instantaneous upgrade to the consumer’s service level
While this demo focused on enabling instant premium access to a live video of a large sporting event, there are countless applications for the guaranteed service level offered by 5G network slices. Consider the applications in tandem with Radisys’ Engage Media Server and Digital Engagement platform. With the combination of 5G, edge computing, and programmable application platform, we can instantly add key stakeholders on a video conference to handle an emergency response, create immediate alerts by identifying potential threats via face recognition from a stadium camera, recognize gunshots by analyzing audio from a microphone, prevent potential fire based on a heat sensor passing a certain threshold, and more.
As we approach the era of hyper-connectivity and 5G, all industry players, including telcos and media partners, must consider the new possibilities of service. At Radisys, we are prepared to assist in making 5G connectivity a reality.
